WELCOME TO THE 2008/9 ACADEMIC YEAR!

We'd like to welcome you all to KCL Debating this year, which we're sure will be a vintage year for the society. Please feel free to come along and check out what debating is like! Our first event had an attendence of over 100; Debating is probably the most popular society on campus!

Two important things to note:

1. Make sure you have your KCL ID with you if you arrive after 6, as it will be checked by the strict security after then.

2. If you are a non-KCL student and want to attend, email me, the webmaster (luke.blaxill@kcl.ac.uk) and we will put you on the external approved delegates list, and then you can get in after 6pm as well.

Welcome to King's College London Debating Society. We are one of the largest and most successful university debating societies in the country. We hold weekly meetings on Tuesdays at 6.00pm in Room 1.13 on the first floor of the Franklin Wilkin's Building (close to Waterloo Station). We offer a friendly and open-minded forum for the lively debate and discussion of politics, international relations, economics, social issues, law, and more light-hearted matters. We operate using the globally-employed British Parliamentary Rules of debate, and are extremely active in inter-varsity and competive debating in the UK and overseas.

Debating is an enjoyable, challenging, and empowering hobby. Having the confidence to speak in front of judges and an audience can seem daunting at first, but after intial trepiditions are overcome, it can be an extremely useful way of building up public speaking skills, powers of analysis, and general knowledge. Society meetings and the competive debating circuit are also a great way of meeting new people and making friends!

At out weekly meetings, we hold a single British Paliamentary Debate with eight 5 minite speeches on a topic which will be revealed 15 minites prior to the debate. You are welcome to debate, judge, or simply watch. We usually go to a nearby pub afterwards for a few drinks.
