The weekly meetings are the lifeblood of the Society's activities. For details of where and when we meet, check back here in September. Predominantly the meetings are a chance for Society members to practice debating and keep in touch with the Society's activities. The usual format for the evening is for there to be a debate on a motion. We may run several debates simultaneously depending on the number of people present. We debate on a wide range of issues, from foreign affairs to ethical dilemmas to economics. We hold debates in the 'British Parliamentary' format which is the standard format used by British Universities. For more information on how we debate, see about debating. At meetings we also give notices about what the Society has been up to recently and any notable achievements from our members. We also advertise places in competitions we are entering at our weekly meetings. New for 2011/2012, we are introducing training sessions regularly at our meetings. We plan to hold these 45 minute sessions at the beginning of meetings before the debate, every few weeks. They will be given by experienced members within the society as well as notable debaters from in and around the London area. In term one we will be covering the basics of how to debate, as well as basic tactical advice on how to improve your debating. In term two we will continue training on how to improve your debating, and introduce specific training on how to deal with certain topics. And of course, after every meeting we will be heading to a local pub.
Weekly meetings are at 6.30 every Monday evening ( term time only) in room FWB 1.11 ( the Franklin Wilkins Building at Waterloo).
